The Pittsburgh Penguins knew, before they started this series, that the Montreal Canadiens were not a team to underestimate. This eighth seed team dropped to a 1-3 record against the Top Ranked Washington Capitals, only to come back and finish the first seed off. So far, in this series, neither team has won two consecutive games, and if the pattern continues, the Penguins will come out on top; however, this is the Pens last chance to keep their playoff hopes alive.

A little over a minute into this game, Montreal started off the scoring, taking the early lead. Then, in the seventh minute, Sidney Crosby put in his first goal of the series, giving him six for the post season. Then, in the fifth minute of the second period, Kris Letang took advantage of a Power Play, giving the Penguins the lead.

Pittsburgh didn’t hold the lead for very long, because in the tenth minute, Montreal tied the score up again, followed by a leading goal in the 13th minute. The Pens entered the third period down by a goal, still with a chance to pull out the win. The Canadiens fourth goal halfway through the third period gave the Pens a bit more than they could handle. With less than a minute and a half remaining, Bill Guerin made one final effort to pull out this win, grabbing his fourth goal of the Post Season. However, it just wasn’t enough.

The Pens out shot the Habs 37-25, but had trouble getting more than three goals past the Canadien goal tender. Marc Andre Fleury had 21 saves, but it wasn’t enough to hold off their opponents. Fleury really needs to be on his “A” game in Game 7, otherwise his team’s hopes of back-to-back championships will no longer be an option.

Game 7, and the conclusion to this back and forth series, will take place this Wednesday, May 12, at 7:00 P.M. ET. Due to the Pens higher seeding, the game will come back to Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh Penguins almost pulled off both Wins in Montreal, which would have sent both teams back to Pittsburgh for a possible, Final game. Now, the series is tied, but the Pens will get a chance to take the lead again, on their Home Ice. At that point, they would return to Montreal, to hopefully clinch the series.

The Canadiens started off the scoring with a goal in the opening two and half minutes, but Max Talbot answered back less than a minute later with his second of the Post Season. About two minutes after that, Chris Kunitz gave the Penguins the lead with his Power Play goal, with an assist coming from Sidney Crosby; this was Crosby first point in the last three games.

After that second Pittsburgh goal, the game remained scoreless up until the second minute of the third period, when Montreal tied things up again. It wouldn’t have been so bad if the Habs put a third goal in a little over a minute later, giving them the lead once again. There was still plenty of time in the game, but Pittsburgh just couldn’t tie things up again.

Marc Andre Fleury held the Habs to a single goal throughout the first two periods, but then gave up the back-to-back goals in the third that gave the Canadiens the victory. Fleury had 22 saves throughout the game. The Pens, once again, out-shot their opponent, but just couldn’t put many past their goalie.

Game 5 will take place this Saturday, May 8, at 7:00 P.M. ET.

Tonight, the Pittsburgh Penguins will play their Tenth game of the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs, and their Fourth game of the series against the Montreal Canadiens. Coming off their Shut Out on Tuesday, the Penguins are now a game up on the Canadiens, with one more to play in Montreal before returning to Pittsburgh. If the Pens can pull off this win tonight, they’ll be able to Clinch Round 2 back home.

Despite scoring zero points in his last two games, Sidney Crosby still leads the NHL Post Season with 16. Also, he is tied for first in Assists with Jonathan Toews. Last season, Crosby became the youngest Captain, in NHL history, to lead his team to a Stanley Cup victory. If he can do it again, he will continue to add to his, already stellar list of accomplishments.

Jordan Staal is making a speedy recovery, despite suffering a foot injury in Game 1 of this series against Montreal. Immediately receiving surgery to repair a torn tendon, Staal was back on the ice practicing within a few days. No official word on whether Staal will play in Game 4, but it seems pretty likely he’ll return sometime in Round 2.

At the moment, the Boston Bruins are one game out from sweeping the Philadelphia Flyers. That would make the Bruins the Penguins next opponent, in the Eastern Conference Finals. Luckily, Pittsburgh would still maintain home ice advantage.

First Round, Playoff Hockey doesn’t get much more exciting than this! The Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa Senators battling in Game 5, with Ottawa on the brink of elimination; a three goal comeback, for the lead, countered with a tying goal, to send the game into Overtime; two scoreless Overtimes, totaling 40 minutes. Unfortunately, the Senators did avoid elimination with a goal in the seventh minute of the Third Overtime.

Ottawa took a fairly early lead with two goals between the 10th and 12th minute of the first period. Luckily, Kris Letang had a Power Play goal in the final minutes of the period to send the Penguins into intermission down by a single goal. Then, a little over a full period later, Chris Kunitz tied the score up with his second goal of the Post Season, and Sidney Crosby’s eighth assist.

Crosby went on to grab his fifth goal of the Post Season in the third period, giving Pittsburgh the lead. With less than ten minutes left until the Pens clinched the first round, Ottawa tied the score up, once again. A total of 30 shots were exchanged between the two teams in the first two Overtimes, but nobody managed to put anything in. Then, in the seventh minute of the third Overtime, after about 107 minutes had been played, the Senators put one past Marc Andre Fleury to send the series to Game 6.

Despite taking the loss, Fleury held off 40 shots throughout the game, and three full, scoreless periods. The defending Stanley Cup Champion Goalie has had some ups and downs this season, but he put on a pretty impressive performance in Game 5.

Game 6 will take place this Saturday, April 24, at 7:00 P.M. ET. If the Pens take it, they clinch the series; if not, they get one more shot, back in Pittsburgh.

Thursday Night, more than 50 different famous faces from the Pittsburgh Penguin’s organization turned out to help celebrate the Penguin’s Final Regular Season Game. According to the Penguins website, “The special guests included former players, coaches and general managers who played such a huge part of Penguins history at the old arena – which was known as the Civic Arena when the team made its NHL debut in the 1967-68 season.”

The next Home Regular Season game for the Penguins will take place at their new stadium, the Consol Energy Center, which is still being constructed.

A Few Tribute Videos commemorating the stadium and the organization were shown before the game. It included clips of old games, some of Mario Lemieux’s amazing career, and clips from last season after the Penguins won the Stanley Cup.

The guests and fans all received a great game with an even better outcome! Pittsburgh went on to defeat the New York Islanders, 7-3, tying the New Jersey Devils in points and records. The two teams are now tied for the Atlantic Division Leader with the Devils only ahead because of the series record between the two teams. However, the Penguins are guaranteed to fall somewhere between the second and fourth seed in the Playoffs.

With only seven games remaining in the Pittsburgh Penguins Regular Season, they refuse to give up the fight for Atlantic Division Leader. Tied in points with the New Jersey Devils, but down a game, the Penguins maintained their neck and neck battle after defeating the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday night. After an early lead from the Flyers, Pittsburgh came back to take their 43rd victory of the season. Pittsburgh won five of the six match-ups between them and Philadelphia this year.

Only about a minute into the game, the Flyers took the lead, giving the Penguins a bad start. However, Pittsburgh would come back with four goals throughout the remainder of the game. Philadelphia held that one goal lead until the final minute of the first period, when Chris Kunitz sank his 13th goal of the season, with one of the assists going to Marc Andre Fleury. Six minutes into the second period, Pascal Dupuis gave the Penguins the lead with an assist for Sidney Crosby.

The Penguins held the one goal lead until the seventh minute of the final period, when Matt Cooke made it a two goal lead. Finally, with about five and a half minutes left in the game, Ruslan Fedotenko scored a Power Play goal, pretty much sealing the Penguins victory; Crosby had assists on the final two goals also. Crosby is now only seven points away from tying Alexander Ovechkin for the Art Ross Trophy.

Not only did Fleury only allow one goal and grab his 34th win of the season, but he had his first assist of the season; an assist for a goalie is not impossible, but not very common. He had 26 saves against the Flyers.

Hopefully, the Penguins can keep this momentum against the Toronto Maple Leafs Today, March 28, at 5:00 P.M. ET. Not that the Penguins really need the help, considering they are one of the best teams in the NHL, and the Maple Leafs are one of the worst.

A single second is what stood between Overtime and a Shoot Out…between another chance for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and a victory for the Carolina Hurricanes. Pittsburgh trailed the Hurricanes for most of the game, but by the end of the second period, the Penguins began putting goals in, eventually going to Overtime. Despite the loss, the Penguins still grabbed a point, maintaining a two point lead in the Atlantic Division.

Carolina put the opening goal in during the sixth minute of the game; they held this one goal lead all the way up until the final seconds of the second period, when Jordan Staal got his 20th goal of the season, during a Power Play. In the 13th minute of the third period, Evgeni Malkin gave Pittsburgh the lead with his 24th goal of the season; Malkin, who was the Art Ross Trophy recipient last season, has not had the same success putting up points this season.

With exactly four minutes left in the game, the Hurricanes tied things up once again, sending the game into Overtime. Eight shots were exchanged in Extra Time, and just when it seemed like this game would be decided by a Shoot Out, the Hurricanes put a game winning goal in. Literally, .9 seconds remaining on the clock.

Tough luck for Marc Andre Fleury, who barely missed a final shot that ended the game. Fleury made 26 saves against the Hurricanes, taking his fifth Extra Time loss of the season. Hopefully, he will be able to put this game behind him and keep his head in the game for the final stretch of the season, and the Playoffs.

The Penguins get a day to recuperate before taking on the Detroit Red Wings this Monday, March 22, at 7:00 P.M. ET. This will be the second of two Regular Season games between these two teams, with the first resulting in a Penguins victory.
