A single second is what stood between Overtime and a Shoot Out…between another chance for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and a victory for the Carolina Hurricanes. Pittsburgh trailed the Hurricanes for most of the game, but by the end of the second period, the Penguins began putting goals in, eventually going to Overtime. Despite the loss, the Penguins still grabbed a point, maintaining a two point lead in the Atlantic Division.

Carolina put the opening goal in during the sixth minute of the game; they held this one goal lead all the way up until the final seconds of the second period, when Jordan Staal got his 20th goal of the season, during a Power Play. In the 13th minute of the third period, Evgeni Malkin gave Pittsburgh the lead with his 24th goal of the season; Malkin, who was the Art Ross Trophy recipient last season, has not had the same success putting up points this season.

With exactly four minutes left in the game, the Hurricanes tied things up once again, sending the game into Overtime. Eight shots were exchanged in Extra Time, and just when it seemed like this game would be decided by a Shoot Out, the Hurricanes put a game winning goal in. Literally, .9 seconds remaining on the clock.

Tough luck for Marc Andre Fleury, who barely missed a final shot that ended the game. Fleury made 26 saves against the Hurricanes, taking his fifth Extra Time loss of the season. Hopefully, he will be able to put this game behind him and keep his head in the game for the final stretch of the season, and the Playoffs.

The Penguins get a day to recuperate before taking on the Detroit Red Wings this Monday, March 22, at 7:00 P.M. ET. This will be the second of two Regular Season games between these two teams, with the first resulting in a Penguins victory.

The Pittsburgh Penguins came close to pulling out the win against the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night, taking the game into Overtime. Unfortunately, Carolina put an early Sudden Death goal in, making them 2-1 in this season’s series. However, the Penguins still managed to walk away with a point, and still maintain a four point lead in the Atlantic Division.

It only took Jordan Staal a minute and four seconds to score the opening goal for Pittsburgh off an assist from Pascal Dupuis. About four and a half minutes later, Bill Guerin made it a two goal lead during a Penguins Power Play. Unfortunately, before the halfway point of the period, Carolina came back with two of their own, tying the game.

Two minutes into the second period, Staal’s older brother, Eric, gave the Hurricanes their first lead of the game. Luckily, only about four minutes later, Matt Cooke put in his 13th goal of the season, off another assist from Dupuis. The second half of this game had no goals, sending the game into Extra Time. Sadly, Carolina put in the game winning goal after only 23 seconds.

Brent Johnson was in charge of the Penguins net for this game. Johnson had 17 saves, giving up four goals, including the Overtime goal. His season record is now 9-5-1.

The Penguins next game will be a big one, taking on the New Jersey Devils. The Devils are the team that is currently four points behind the Penguins in the division. That game will take place Tonight, March 12, at 7:00 P.M. ET.

The Pittsburgh Penguins added a second win following the Olympic break, taking down the New York Rangers in Overtime. The Rangers, who are a Division Rival, currently sit on the lower end of the Atlantic Division. The Penguins have now retaken the position as Division Leader; unfortunately, the New Jersey Devils, who trail by a single point, have played two fewer games.

The Rangers took an early lead in this game, putting a goal in during the opening two minutes. Luckily, Chris Kunitz answered right back about four minutes later with a Power Play goal. Before the half way point of the period, Jordan Staal had an unassisted goal, giving him his 17th of the season and putting Pittsburgh in front. Before the period could come to an end, New York tied it up again with a Power Play goal of their own.

The Rangers dominated the first part of the second period, starting with a goal in the second minute, giving them the lead again. After their third consecutive goal in the 12th minute of the period, Marc Andre Fleury was switched out with Brent Johnson. Less than two minutes after the switch, Michael Rupp made it only a one goal difference between the teams, with the Penguins trailing.

Pittsburgh remained one goal behind until nearly 12 minutes into the final period, when Alex Goligoski scored his seventh goal of the season and tied things up. That goal sent the game into Overtime, where Evgeni Malkin had the game winning goal during a Power Play; the goal was originally credited to Staal, but upon further review, and a confession by Staal, Malkin was named the game winner. The Penguins dominated Overtime with four shots and a goal, compared to the zero shots from the Rangers.

Fleury struggled a bit in this game, only making eight saves and giving up four goals, before being pulled. Johnson did a great job filling in for the second half of the game, despite barely being tested with only four shots. Regardless, the Penguins managed to pull out the win.

The Penguins next game will be against the Dallas Stars this Saturday, March 6, at 1:00 P.M. ET.

Sidney Crosby has netted his first 40 goal season since being with the Pittsburgh Penguins; during his debut season, he came close with 39 goals. Crosby had the Penguins only two goals in the game, including the goal that sent the game into Overtime; unfortunately, the New York Rangers pulled out the win in Overtime. Pittsburgh is only two points behind the New Jersey Devils in the Atlantic Division.

It took Crosby less than seven minutes to put the Penguins up on the board off an assist from Bill Guerin. Pittsburgh held the lead until a minute and a half into the second period when New York tied the score up; before the tenth minute of the period, the Rangers took the lead. Luckily, less than four minutes into the final period, Crosby scored off a Pittsburgh Power Play, tying the game and giving him his 41st goal of the season. Unfortunately, the Rangers scored during the first 1:02 into Overtime, leaving the Penguins with a single point.

Brent Johnson had his first start in goal since January 24. He did fairly well, making 20 saves and giving up two goals in the second period before being switched out with Marc Andre Fleury. During Fleury’s time in the game, he made 16 saves, and the only goal he gave up was the game winning goal in Overtime.

The Pittsburgh Penguins final game before the Olympic break will be their first, and only, Regular Season game against the Nashville Predators. That game will take place Sunday, February 14, at 1:00 P.M. ET.

For the second time this season, the Pittsburgh Steelers settled their match in Over Time. Unfortunately, the result of this Over Time match up was a loss, bringing the Steelers record to 6-5. They are now tied with the Ravens in the AFC North.

Dennis Dixon did a great job filling in for Ben Roethlisberger, who sat out the game due to hit he took on his head last week. Roethlisberger is not seriously hurt, but decided it was best to sit the week out. Dixon threw for 145 yards, had one Touchdown and one Interception.

The Ravens sent the game into Over Time with a Field Goal in the final seconds of regular time. In Over Time, Pittsburgh started out with the ball, but had to punt it away. Luckily, the Steelers defense managed to force a punt from Baltimore. Unfortunately, Dixon’s pass to Santonio Holmes was intercepted, putting Baltimore in Field Goal range. After a few more plays, the Ravens kicked the winning Field Goal.
