The Pittsburgh Penguins are now tied for Leader in the Atlantic Division after Shutting Out the Carolina Hurricanes. The Pens continue to switch off between goalies, but it’s becoming more and more clear that Brent Johnson deserves more playing time.

Only about four minutes into the game, Pascal Dupuis gave Pittsburgh the early lead with his third goal of the season. Then, early in the second period, Max Talbot made it a two goal lead, with assists from Arron Asham and Michael Rupp. Then, to continue the one goal per period trend, Dupuis made it 3-0.

Johnson was on fire in the net, making 33 saves and not allowing a single goal. He now has five wins and only a single Overtime loss on his record. Even more impressive, he has only allowed seven goals in six games.

The Penguins will take on Dallas Stars this Wednesday, November 3, at 8:30 P.M. ET.

A single second is what stood between Overtime and a Shoot Out…between another chance for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and a victory for the Carolina Hurricanes. Pittsburgh trailed the Hurricanes for most of the game, but by the end of the second period, the Penguins began putting goals in, eventually going to Overtime. Despite the loss, the Penguins still grabbed a point, maintaining a two point lead in the Atlantic Division.

Carolina put the opening goal in during the sixth minute of the game; they held this one goal lead all the way up until the final seconds of the second period, when Jordan Staal got his 20th goal of the season, during a Power Play. In the 13th minute of the third period, Evgeni Malkin gave Pittsburgh the lead with his 24th goal of the season; Malkin, who was the Art Ross Trophy recipient last season, has not had the same success putting up points this season.

With exactly four minutes left in the game, the Hurricanes tied things up once again, sending the game into Overtime. Eight shots were exchanged in Extra Time, and just when it seemed like this game would be decided by a Shoot Out, the Hurricanes put a game winning goal in. Literally, .9 seconds remaining on the clock.

Tough luck for Marc Andre Fleury, who barely missed a final shot that ended the game. Fleury made 26 saves against the Hurricanes, taking his fifth Extra Time loss of the season. Hopefully, he will be able to put this game behind him and keep his head in the game for the final stretch of the season, and the Playoffs.

The Penguins get a day to recuperate before taking on the Detroit Red Wings this Monday, March 22, at 7:00 P.M. ET. This will be the second of two Regular Season games between these two teams, with the first resulting in a Penguins victory.

The Pittsburgh Penguins came close to pulling out the win against the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night, taking the game into Overtime. Unfortunately, Carolina put an early Sudden Death goal in, making them 2-1 in this season’s series. However, the Penguins still managed to walk away with a point, and still maintain a four point lead in the Atlantic Division.

It only took Jordan Staal a minute and four seconds to score the opening goal for Pittsburgh off an assist from Pascal Dupuis. About four and a half minutes later, Bill Guerin made it a two goal lead during a Penguins Power Play. Unfortunately, before the halfway point of the period, Carolina came back with two of their own, tying the game.

Two minutes into the second period, Staal’s older brother, Eric, gave the Hurricanes their first lead of the game. Luckily, only about four minutes later, Matt Cooke put in his 13th goal of the season, off another assist from Dupuis. The second half of this game had no goals, sending the game into Extra Time. Sadly, Carolina put in the game winning goal after only 23 seconds.

Brent Johnson was in charge of the Penguins net for this game. Johnson had 17 saves, giving up four goals, including the Overtime goal. His season record is now 9-5-1.

The Penguins next game will be a big one, taking on the New Jersey Devils. The Devils are the team that is currently four points behind the Penguins in the division. That game will take place Tonight, March 12, at 7:00 P.M. ET.

Monday night, the Pittsburgh Penguins, with Jordan Staal, went up against the Carolina Hurricanes, with Eric Staal. The Penguins fell behind the Hurricanes early in the game, but started making a quick comeback in the second period. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to finish it off, taking their second consecutive loss.

The Penguins took ten shots in the opening period, but couldn’t put anything in. Unfortunately, the Hurricanes did not have this issue, putting two goals in to give them an early lead. About two and a half minutes into the second period, Carolina took a three goal lead on Pittsburgh.

A few minutes after the three goal deficit occurred, the Penguins got their first goal of the game; Sidney Crosby got his 20th goal of the season off an assist from Bill Guerin. Only 49 seconds later, Michael Rupp emerged from heavy traffic, recovering Pascal Dupuis’s deflected shot, and putting it in. Only one goal behind, the Penguins had more than half a game to finish their comeback. Unfortunately, they were unable to, taking the loss to the Hurricanes.

Marc Andre Fleury had a tough first two periods, giving up the two goals in the first period and one goal in the second, with only 15 shots on him. However, he really did his job in the third period, saving all six shots; however, the offense couldn’t manage to get the tying goal in. Fleury had 18 saves throughout the game.

The Penguins will take on the Montreal Canadiens this Thursday, December 10, at 7:30 P.M. ET. The first two games between these teams, this season, have ended in victories for the Penguins.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are now on a four game winning streak after defeating the Carolina Hurricanes, only losing one game so far. The Penguins are currently tied with the New York Rangers in overall points, but the Rangers lead just slightly due to more goals. Luckily, it is still very early in the season.

Pittsburgh held the lead for the majority of the game, scoring their first goal in the first period. After some great saves by Marc Andre Fleury and the Pittsburgh defense, Evgeni Malkin made a long pass to Michael Rupp who made a quick move and got it past the Carolina goalie. Early in the second period, Evgeni Malkin put a goal in of his own off a short pass from Pascal Dupuis.

The third period was where the Hurricanes made a comeback. Two goals in the first half of the third period sent the game into Over Time. After a scoreless Over Time, the Penguins had their second shootout of the season. Chris Kunitz had the winning goal in the six round Shoot Out.

Fleury was on fire in the goal, as usual, making 27 saves during the game, in addition to the five he had during the Shoot Out. Fleury has had 155 saves throughout his six games. The Penguins only loss came from a day that Fleury was not in the net.

The Pittsburgh Penguins will try to keep their streak alive as they battle the Tampa Bay Lightning this Saturday, October 17 at 7:30 P.M. The Lightning are currently 2-3.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have done it! They are the 2009 Eastern Conference Champs! After sweeping the Carolina Hurricanes in the Third Round series, the Penguins are moving on to the Stanley Cup to either play the Chicago Blackhawks or the Detroit Red Wings.

The Hurricanes came out strong at the beginning of this game, determined not to get swept. They put a goal in during the first two minutes of play; however, this would end up being the only goal they would put in all game. Ruslan Fedotenko tied it up a few minutes later followed by a goal from Maxime Talbot in the final two minutes of the first period, putting the Penguins ahead. Bill Guerin tapped in a goal from an outstanding pass from Sidney Crosby. Pittsburgh held Carolina off for the rest of the game, adding one more from Craig Adams into an empty net. The Penguins took the series from this 4-1 win.

Marc-Andre Fleury was definitely the savior of this game. Fleury made some absolutely amazing saves, giving his team the opportunity to sweep the Hurricanes. Overall, Fleury made 30 saves and only let one shot get past him. Now Fleury will really get to display his skills in the Stanley Cup.

The Penguins get a few days to rest while they wait for the Chicago Blackhawks and the Detroit Red Wings to finish up their series. Currently, the Red Wings lead 3-1. The Penguins lost to the Red Wings in the Stanley Cup last year.

The 2009 NHL Playoffs have really heated up in this third round. In the Western Conference, the Chicago Blackhawks battle it out with, defending champs, the Detroit Red Wings. Even more interesting, there is a little sibling rivalry happening in the fight for champion of the Eastern Conference. The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Carolina Hurricanes each have a Staal brother on their team.

The Alternate Captain of the Carolina Hurricanes is oldest brother Eric Staal, while the Pittsburgh Penguins have younger brother Jordan Staal, who is not even 21 yet. The two hockey stars will have to put their family ties aside as they battle for a spot in the Stanley Cup.

Currently the Pittsburgh Penguins lead the series 3-0, and might possibly sweep the Hurricanes after Tuesday's match up in Carolina.

After two pretty intense games against the Pittsburgh Penguins, it was expected that the Carolina Hurricanes would break out in full strength back home for Game 3. Luckily, the Penguins captured the win with, what appeared to be, little effort. The Penguins are now one game away from three things:

1) Sweeping the Hurricanes, 4-0

2) Claiming the position of 2009 Eastern Conference Champs

3) Securing a spot in the 2009 Stanley Cup against either the Chicago Blackhawks or Detroit Red Wings

The Hurricanes started off the scoring with an early goal in the first four minutes of play. The Penguins did not let that lead last too long, tying the game with a goal from Alternate Captain Evgeni Malkin only three minutes later. In the final minute of the first period, Captain Sidney Crosby gave the Penguins the lead, which they would hold the rest of the game. Malkin added his second goal of the game in the final 12 seconds of the period.

The second period brought about many good shots for both teams, but no goals were made. In the first two minutes of the third period, the Hurricanes tried the close the gap with a goal, making the score 3-2. However, Ruslan Fedotenko made it a 4-2 game with his goal in the middle of the third period.

In the final two minutes of the game, Carolina was forced to pull their goalie from the net in order to add an extra man to the offense, but this left the net wide open for Craig Adams to add another for Pittsburgh. The Hurricanes added their goalie back in, but Bill Guerin was still able to get a final goal past him, making the final score 6-2.

Who stood strong in the Penguins net for Game 3? None other than the spectacular Marc-Andre Fleury. Fleury made a successful 32 saves in the game, aiding his team in their fourth consecutive win.

The Pittsburgh Penguins will play the Carolina Hurricanes, in what will hopefully be their final game before the Stanley Cup, this Tuesday, May 26 at 7:30 Eastern Time. Game 4 will take place in Carolina, but if the Hurricanes force the series into a Game 5, it will take place back in Pittsburgh.

Thursday night's game was a high scoring one for the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Carolina Hurricanes, ending 7-4. The Penguins skated away with their second win in this Third Round, putting them two away from advancing to the Stanley Cup as the Eastern Conference Champions. Evgeni Malkin helped secure this win for Pittsburgh by getting a Hat Trick. This was the first Hat Trick the Pittsburgh Penguins have seen in post season in the last ten years.

Penguin's Captain Sidney Crosby had the first goal of the game less than two minutes into the game. Only about a minute later, the Hurricanes tied up the game. A little later, Evgeni Malkin put in his first goal of the night, but less than a minute later Carolina tied it again. About half way through the first period, the Hurricanes took their first lead of the game, making the score 3-2.

Luckily, early in the second period, Maxime Talbot tied the score yet again. With less than a minute left in the period, Chris Kunitz added his first post-season goal of the year, putting the Penguins ahead. The third period rolled around and only about three minutes into it the Hurricanes tied it up for the final time of the night. From that point, the Penguins dominated the scoreboard with two more from Evgeni Malkin, giving him his Hat Trick. Tyler Kennedy added the final touch to the game with a goal into an empty net.

Marc-Andre Fleury was a beast in the goal! At the end he emerged with 24 saves. Once again, Fleury knows how to take charge when the timing is crucial.

The Pittsburgh Penguins will play the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 3 this Saturday, May 23 at 7:30 Eastern Time.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are off to a great start in Round 3, defeating the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2. Even better is that this win was obtained in Carolina, giving the Penguins the upper hand in the series. Pittsburgh will play one more game away before returning home for two games. Three more wins and the Penguins advance to the Stanley Cup as Eastern Conference Champs.

The Penguins dominated the first period with two goals; the first came from Miroslav Satan and the second came from Alternate Captain Evgeni Malkin. About half way through the second period, the Hurricanes tried to close the gap, but the Penguins made it a two point difference once again when Defensive man Philippe Boucher knocked one in during the third period. Carolina tried to make a last minute comeback with a goal in the final minute and half of play, but the Penguins held them off.

Once again, Marc-Andre Fleury really did his part when it counted. Fleury held the Hurricanes to two goals, saving 23 shots. Fleury has been a great asset during this season and especially during the playoffs.

The Pittsburgh Penguins will play Game 2 against the Carolina Hurricanes this Thursday, May 21 at 7:30 Eastern Time.
