Pirates Sign Six, Young Free Agents from Latin America

The Pittsburgh Pirates have just signed six young free agents from South of the Border:

Pedro Lara, a 16-year-old outfielder from the Dominican Republic.

Roberson Valdez, a 16-year-old third baseman from the Dominican.

Alen Hanson, a 16-year-old second baseman from the Dominican.

Orlando Castro, a 17-year-old left-handed pitcher from Honduras.

Carlos Esqueda, a 17-year-old shortstop from Mexico.

Richard Montilla, a 17-year-old right-handed pitcher from Panama.

The Pirates Administration has made some questionable moves in the past few weeks, so hopefully this proves to be a good move for the team.

Pittsburgh Pirates Trade Nyjer Morgan

The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded away one of their star players, Nyjer Morgan, to the Washington Nationals.  Also included in the trade is reliever Sean Burnett; the Pirates will be receiving reliever Joel Hanrahan and outfielder Lastings Milledge.

Hopefully the Pirates have a plan for this because Morgan was one of their last hopes for not ending the season below .500.

Pittsburgh Pirates Trade Nate McLouth

The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded their outfielder and former star, Nate McLouth to the Atlanta Braves for three prospects: outfielder Gorkys Hernandez, right-handed starter Charlie Morton and left-handed starter Jeff Locke.

McLouth just signed a multi-year contract with the Pirates in February.  Back when he signed this deal, he looked like a great prospect for Pittsburgh.  So far this season, he has had 27 runs, 9 Home Runs, and a .256 batting average.

Hopefully, this trade will turn out to be a great decision for the Pirates.

Pittsburgh Pirates Are Off to a Great Start

After a little over three weeks into the baseball season, the Pittsburgh Pirates are looking good.  Currently, their record sits at 11-8.  They are over 500!  It may be too early in the season to tell how well the Pirates will do, but for the past couple of years it has been unusual to see the Pirates with such a good record at any point in the season.

Could this be the Pirates year to win the World Series?  Maybe we should start a little smaller.  Could this be the year the Pirates go to the playoffs?  The Pittsburgh Pirates have not been the a playoff game since 1992!

Despite the unpleasant connotation linked with the Pirates, they are looking pretty good this year.  They owe much of their success to players like Nyjer Morgan, the LaRoche Brothers (Andy and Adam), Nate McLouth, and Ramon Vazquez, along with pitchers like Paul Maholm and Zach Duke.

Pittsburgh PIrates Record Now 2-2 Against the St. Louis Cardinals

Thursday's final match up between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the St. Louis Cardinals resulted in a final loss for the Pirates, bringing their record for the series and the season to 2-2.  Unlike the previous three games, this one was low scoring, ending 2-1.

The Pirates put up their first, and only, run in the third inning with Ramon Vasquez scoring off of a base hit by Nyjer Morgan.  Then in the seventh inning, the Cardinals obtain to RBIs, giving them the winning run.

On the mound, Ross Ohlendorf pitched six innings, only striking out one batter, but giving up seven hits and the Cardinal's only two runs.  Tyler Yates pitched for an inning, giving no hits and striking out one batter.

The Pittsburgh Pirates will begin their next series against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday, April 10 at 7:10 Eastern Time.

Pittsburgh Pirates Defeat St. Louis Cardinals Again

After suffering a tough loss in Tuesday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals, the Pittsburgh Pirates put up their second win in the four game series.  The game ended with a final score of 7-4.

The Pirates took an early lead in this game, putting up four runs during the second inning.  First, Brandon Moss scored off of a single by Jack Wilson.  Then, Roman Vazquez scored off of a single by Nyjer Morgan.  The scoring continued with a run from Jack Wilson off of a Freddy Sanchez single.  The scoring finally ended with a final run from Nyjer Morgan off of a single by Ryan Doumit.  St. Louis, trying to stay in the game, added their first run in the same inning.  However, the Pirates put up another during the following inning with another Brandon Moss run.

During the fifth inning, the Cardinals brought the score to 5-2.  In the sixth, Pittsburgh gained two more runs from a Nate McLouth homer which also brought in Freddy Sanchez.  The Cardinals added one more in the sixth and another in the ninth, but it just wasn't enough for them to defeat the Pirates.

On the mound, Zach Duke allowed three runs, but struck out four batters during his six innings in.  John Grabow pitched for a little over an inning, earning a strike out.  Tyler Yates gave up the Cardinal's ninth inning run before being pulled of the mound.

For their last match of the four game series, the Pittsburgh Pirates will take on the St. Louis Cardinals.  The game will take place Thursday, April 9 at 1:40 Eastern Time.

Pittsburgh Pirates Take Tough Loss to St. Louis Cardinals

The Pittsburgh Pirates were unable to come back and beat the St. Louis Cardinals this time.  The game ended in a tough 9-3 loss for the Pirates.

Pittsburgh started the game off good, putting the first run up on the board.  Nyjer Morgan scored off a sacrifice fly by Ryan Doumit.  Immediately after, St. Louis answered back with two runs.  The Cardinals managed to put up at least one run every inning for the first half of the game.  Pittsburgh didn't end up scoring again until the sixth inning, when they added two more runs.  Freddy Sanchez hit a home run that also drove in Nyjer Morgan.  However, the rest of the game remained scoreless, resulting in a dominant win for St. Louis.

On the mound, this is where Pittsburgh had most of their troubles.  Ian Snell pitched for four innings of this game.  During these four troubled innings, he gave up nine hits and eights runs.  Donald Veal took his place, but was only in for an inning where he gave up another run.  Sean Burnett and Craig Hansen finished up the game giving up no runs.

The Pittsburgh Pirates play against the St. Louis Cardinals again this Wednesday, April 8 at 8:15 Eastern Time.

Pittsburgh Pirates Win First Game of the Season Against the St. Louis Cardinals

First game of the season for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and they take the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-4.  It was a great game that really came down to the final inning.  Will this be the year the Pirates turn around their bad reputation?  Lets hope so.

The Cardinals started the scoring off with two runs in the third inning.  Then in the sixth, the Pirates tied the game back up.  Nyjer Morgan hit a single bringing in Andy LaRoche and Brandon Moss.  The eighth inning brought about two more runs for the Cardinals, looking like the game might end with a loss for the Pirates.  Then in the final inning, Pittsburgh put up four runs, giving them a two run lead.  Adam LaRoche singled, bringing Freddy Sanchez in, and then Jack Wilson doubles, bringing in LaRoche, Eric Hinske, and Brandon Moss.

Paul Maholm pitched the majority of the game for the Pirates, giving up seven hits and two runs and striking out a batter.  Tyler Yates gave up the other two runs while John Grabow and Matt Capps were scoreless during their short stints on the mound.

The Pittsburgh Pirates play the Cardinals again Tuesday, April 7 at 8:15 Eastern Time.
