The Pittsburgh Penguins knew, before they started this series, that the Montreal Canadiens were not a team to underestimate. This eighth seed team dropped to a 1-3 record against the Top Ranked Washington Capitals, only to come back and finish the first seed off. So far, in this series, neither team has won two consecutive games, and if the pattern continues, the Penguins will come out on top; however, this is the Pens last chance to keep their playoff hopes alive.

A little over a minute into this game, Montreal started off the scoring, taking the early lead. Then, in the seventh minute, Sidney Crosby put in his first goal of the series, giving him six for the post season. Then, in the fifth minute of the second period, Kris Letang took advantage of a Power Play, giving the Penguins the lead.

Pittsburgh didn’t hold the lead for very long, because in the tenth minute, Montreal tied the score up again, followed by a leading goal in the 13th minute. The Pens entered the third period down by a goal, still with a chance to pull out the win. The Canadiens fourth goal halfway through the third period gave the Pens a bit more than they could handle. With less than a minute and a half remaining, Bill Guerin made one final effort to pull out this win, grabbing his fourth goal of the Post Season. However, it just wasn’t enough.

The Pens out shot the Habs 37-25, but had trouble getting more than three goals past the Canadien goal tender. Marc Andre Fleury had 21 saves, but it wasn’t enough to hold off their opponents. Fleury really needs to be on his “A” game in Game 7, otherwise his team’s hopes of back-to-back championships will no longer be an option.

Game 7, and the conclusion to this back and forth series, will take place this Wednesday, May 12, at 7:00 P.M. ET. Due to the Pens higher seeding, the game will come back to Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have pulled off a big win, taking the Montreal Canadiens in Game 5. Now, they have two chances to grab a single win in order to go to advance to Round 3. It wasn’t a very high scoring game, but Pittsburgh held the lead for almost the entire time, putting two past the Montreal goalie.

With nearly a whole period out of the way, Pittsburgh finally put the opening goal in. Kris Letang took advantage of a Power Play, grabbing his fourth goal of the Post Season. Then, nearly ten minutes into the second period, Sergei Gonchar gave the Pens a two goal lead. Pittsburgh held the two goal lead all the way up to final 30 seconds of the game when Montreal put in a Power Play goal. Fortunately, there wasn’t enough time left for them to send the game into Overtime.

Marc Andre Fleury nearly had a Shut Out, but regardless, he got his seventh win of the Post Season. Fleury had 32 saves in the game. This was the first game the Canadiens out shot the Penguins since Game 1, but this time it turned out advantageous for Pittsburgh.

The Penguins can put this away in Game 6, back in Montreal. That game will take place this Monday, May 10, at 7:00 P.M. ET.

The Pittsburgh Penguins almost pulled off both Wins in Montreal, which would have sent both teams back to Pittsburgh for a possible, Final game. Now, the series is tied, but the Pens will get a chance to take the lead again, on their Home Ice. At that point, they would return to Montreal, to hopefully clinch the series.

The Canadiens started off the scoring with a goal in the opening two and half minutes, but Max Talbot answered back less than a minute later with his second of the Post Season. About two minutes after that, Chris Kunitz gave the Penguins the lead with his Power Play goal, with an assist coming from Sidney Crosby; this was Crosby first point in the last three games.

After that second Pittsburgh goal, the game remained scoreless up until the second minute of the third period, when Montreal tied things up again. It wouldn’t have been so bad if the Habs put a third goal in a little over a minute later, giving them the lead once again. There was still plenty of time in the game, but Pittsburgh just couldn’t tie things up again.

Marc Andre Fleury held the Habs to a single goal throughout the first two periods, but then gave up the back-to-back goals in the third that gave the Canadiens the victory. Fleury had 22 saves throughout the game. The Pens, once again, out-shot their opponent, but just couldn’t put many past their goalie.

Game 5 will take place this Saturday, May 8, at 7:00 P.M. ET.

After shutting out the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night, in Montreal, the Pittsburgh Penguins are now up a game in the series. Despite starting out hot at the beginning of the series, Sidney Crosby had another game with no points. Regardless, the Penguins lead the series, 2-1, with one more game in Montreal before returning back to Pittsburgh for Game 5.

A scoreless game up until the third period, it was really anyone’s game until Pascal Dupuis put in an Empty Netter in the final seconds of the game. Evgeni Malkin scored the Pens opening goal in the first 1:16 of the third period, during a Power Play; Sergei Gonchar and Alex Goligoski each had an assist on the play.

Marc Andre Fleury may have only had 18 shots on him, but he had some great saves to keep his opponents scoreless. Fleury marked up his sixth win and first Shut Out of the Playoffs.

Game 4 will take place this Thursday, May 6, at 7:00 P.M. ET.

The Montreal Canadiens have tied the series up at a game a piece, after grabbing the win against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday Afternoon. Despite the Penguins drawing first blood, they couldn’t use the momentum to pull out the win. Now, the teams will travel out to Montreal for Games 3 and 4; the Pens will need to pull out at least one of these wins to keep their head above water in the series.

Matt Cooke had the Penguins lone goal in the opening four and a half minutes, with the assist coming from Max Talbot. Unfortunately, before the period could come to an end, the Canadiens tied things up. A Montreal Power Play goal in the second period gave them the lead, but the Pens were not down and out yet. However, the third Canadien goal in the final three minutes of the game pretty much did Pittsburgh in for Game 2.

Marc Andre Fleury had a pretty good first period, making 11 saves and only giving up a single goal. But in the last two periods, he only had seven saves and gave up two more goals. Despite the Pens out-shooting the Habs, they just couldn’t put any more goals in.

Game 3 will take place this Tuesday, May 4, at 7:00 P.M. ET.

The Pittsburgh Penguins might have ended up with a blessing in Round 2. Going into the Playoffs as a Fourth Seed, Pittsburgh has emerged in Round 2 as the Highest Seeded team in the Eastern Conference. They are already off to a better start against the Montreal Canadiens than the Washington Capitals, winning Game 1. The only lead Montreal had in the game was after their first goal, and they only held that lead for about four minutes. Another beam of light that came from this game was that Pittsburgh looks to be, vastly, improving on their Power Play, putting in four of their six goals while Montreal served penalty minutes.

Four and a half minutes into the game, the Canadiens put in the opening goal of the series; not a good start to the game. However, the Pens refused to let the eighth seed get in their heads, and about four minutes later, while on a Power Play, Sergei Gonchar tied it up with his first goal of the Post Season. In the 13th minute of the game, Pittsburgh went on the Power Play again, and Jordan Staal took advantage of it, giving the Pens the lead.

Only two and a half minutes into Period 2, Kris Letang snagged, yet another, Power Play goal for Pittsburgh. With under five minutes left in the period, Montreal decreased the difference to a single goal again, but before the period could come to an end, Craig Adams made it 4-2; this was Adams second goal of the Post Season.

Just under three minutes into the third period, Alex Goligoski put in….surprise, surprise….the fourth Power Play goal for Pittsburgh. In the 12th minute, the Canadiens answered back with a Power Play goal of their own, but it made little difference. Bill Guerin put the game away with an Empty Netter, and the Pens went on to start the series with a victory.

Marc Andre Fleury gave up three goals against the Canadiens, but had 28 saves. Other than the first goal, none of the goals he allowed came at very crucial points in the game; the Pens already had a two or more goal lead. Fleury may only have a 89.2 Save Percentage, but he’s got five wins under his belt, and only 11 away from adding a second Stanley Cup victory to his career.

Game 2 between the Pens and Habs will take place this Sunday, May 2, at 2:00 P.M. ET.

First Round, Playoff Hockey doesn’t get much more exciting than this! The Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa Senators battling in Game 5, with Ottawa on the brink of elimination; a three goal comeback, for the lead, countered with a tying goal, to send the game into Overtime; two scoreless Overtimes, totaling 40 minutes. Unfortunately, the Senators did avoid elimination with a goal in the seventh minute of the Third Overtime.

Ottawa took a fairly early lead with two goals between the 10th and 12th minute of the first period. Luckily, Kris Letang had a Power Play goal in the final minutes of the period to send the Penguins into intermission down by a single goal. Then, a little over a full period later, Chris Kunitz tied the score up with his second goal of the Post Season, and Sidney Crosby’s eighth assist.

Crosby went on to grab his fifth goal of the Post Season in the third period, giving Pittsburgh the lead. With less than ten minutes left until the Pens clinched the first round, Ottawa tied the score up, once again. A total of 30 shots were exchanged between the two teams in the first two Overtimes, but nobody managed to put anything in. Then, in the seventh minute of the third Overtime, after about 107 minutes had been played, the Senators put one past Marc Andre Fleury to send the series to Game 6.

Despite taking the loss, Fleury held off 40 shots throughout the game, and three full, scoreless periods. The defending Stanley Cup Champion Goalie has had some ups and downs this season, but he put on a pretty impressive performance in Game 5.

Game 6 will take place this Saturday, April 24, at 7:00 P.M. ET. If the Pens take it, they clinch the series; if not, they get one more shot, back in Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have pulled ahead in the series, taking the first game in Ottawa. After a disappointing opening game in Pittsburgh, the Penguins have pulled out two wins, and appear to be gaining steam. Sidney Crosby continues to lead the Post Season with seven points, from two goals and five assists. Meaning, of the ten goals the Pens have scored in the Post Season, Crosby has had a hand in all but three.

Pittsburgh wasted no time, grabbing a goal during the opening 1:17; Alexei Ponikarovsky raced down the ice, slammed on the breaks to lose the defenseman, and smashed a shot past the goalie. Pittsburgh held the one goal lead up until the second period, when Ottawa tied the game up early. A few minutes later, Evgeni Malkin put in his third goal of the Post Season, giving the Penguins the lead again. With under a minute left in the second period, Crosby made it a two goal lead with his Power Play goal.

Bill Guerin continued to extend the gap with his first Post Season goal during the fourth minute of the third period. Ottawa managed to put one more in during a Power Play, but they just couldn’t make up for the damage that had been caused.

Marc Andre Fleury didn’t receive too many shots in the game, but the 20 that he saved were very influential. Keeping the Senators Shut Out through the first period, he helped his team gain the momentum to go on their scoring frenzy.

Game 4, and the last one before returning to Pittsburgh, will take place this Tuesday, April 20, at 7:00 P.M. ET. If they can pull out a Win, then they’ll have the opportunity to take the series in Game 5.

After a close Game 1 that resulted in a loss for the Pittsburgh Penguins, they were determined to take Game 2 from the Ottawa Senators. The Penguins defense limited the Senators to only 20 shots in the game, compared to their 31. Sidney Crosby had a goal and an assist in this game, giving him a hand in every Penguins Post Season goal to date, except one; he leads the NHL in Post Season points.

It was very disheartening seeing Ottawa score in the opening 18 seconds of the game. Luckily, it didn’t seem to phase the Penguins, who tied up the score about eight minutes later. Crosby had the tying goal off an assist from Chris Kunitz. The game remained tied all the way up into the final minutes of the third period, when Kris Letang scored the winning goal for the Pens.

Marc Andre Fleury really stepped up his performance in Game 2, making 19 saves and holding the Senators off for the rest of the game after their opening goal. The goalie can be one of the most disheartened when a team scores so quickly, but Fleury kept his head in the game and pulled out the win.

The two teams travel to Ottawa for Game 3, which will take place this Sunday, April 18, at 6:30 P.M. CT.
