The Pittsburgh Penguins have added their first W to their record after defeating Division Rivals, the New Jersey Devils. The Penguins led the entire game, starting with their first goal late in the first period. Towards the end it got really intense, but Pittsburgh held it out for the victory. Brent Johnson got the start in between the pipes, limiting the Devils to only a single goal.
Defender Alex Goligoski had his second goal of the season, giving the Pens the lead in the final minutes of the first period. Then, early in the second period, Mark Letestu capitalized on a Power Play opportunity, also getting his second goal of the season. In the three games this season, he has already doubled the amount of goals he previously had in the NHL.
Nearly half way through the third period, New Jersey got up on the board, putting themselves only a goal away. The Penguins were in the same situation they had seen in the previous game against Montreal, where they gave up two goals in final 2:12, resulting in the loss. Luckily, this time they held off the Devils for the remaining time, and added an Empty Netter to put the game away. Paul Martin had that final goal for Pittsburgh.
Johnson, who had a 10-6 record last season, has already added a Win to his record. The veteran goalie had 30 saves against the Devils, putting on a spectacular performance. If Marc Andre Fleury continues to struggle this season, Johnson might become more of the key netminder.
The Penguins’ next opponent will be the Toronto Maple Leafs this Wednesday, October 13, at 7:30 P.M. ET.
