Penguins and Maple Leafs Back and Forth in First Season Match Up

Marc Andre Fleury is having a real tough start to this season, dropping his third game by only a single goal. Despite falling behind by a goal early in the game, the Pittsburgh Penguins managed to take the lead at one point. Unfortunately, a brutal second period lost that lead, and then some. Towards the end, it looked like the Pens might be able to send the game into Overtime, but Toronto held them off.
The Maple Leafs netted their first goal in the opening 5:18, but Chris Kunitz tied things up a few minutes later with his Power Play goal; it was Kunitz first goal and Evgeni Malkin’s first assist. During the final three minutes of the period, Max Talbot gave Pittsburgh the lead with his first goal of the season.
Something happened to the Pens in the second period, and they just fell apart. Between the first and eleventh minute, Toronto scored three more goals, only one of which was during a Power Play. Trailing by two goals now, the Penguins fought hard to comeback and tie things up. Malkin was awarded a penalty shot in the 18th minute of the period, but was unsuccessful. Luckily, Sidney Crosby made up for that a minute later with his first goal of the season.
The Pens defense really stepped up in the third period, only allowing two shots. Unfortunately, despite taking nine shots on the Maple Leaf net, Pittsburgh couldn’t put a tying goal in, resulting in their third loss.
This was a terrible game for Fleury, giving up four goals on only 14 shots. His 10 saves left him with a Save Percentage of 71.4%. If he keeps this up, Brent Johnson will be taking his spot between the pipes more often.
The Penguins’ next game will be against the New York Islanders this Friday, October 15, at 7:00 P.M. ET. This should, hopefully, be an easier win for the Pens.
