The Pittsburgh Penguins have pulled ahead in the series, taking the first game in Ottawa. After a disappointing opening game in Pittsburgh, the Penguins have pulled out two wins, and appear to be gaining steam. Sidney Crosby continues to lead the Post Season with seven points, from two goals and five assists. Meaning, of the ten goals the Pens have scored in the Post Season, Crosby has had a hand in all but three.
Pittsburgh wasted no time, grabbing a goal during the opening 1:17; Alexei Ponikarovsky raced down the ice, slammed on the breaks to lose the defenseman, and smashed a shot past the goalie. Pittsburgh held the one goal lead up until the second period, when Ottawa tied the game up early. A few minutes later, Evgeni Malkin put in his third goal of the Post Season, giving the Penguins the lead again. With under a minute left in the second period, Crosby made it a two goal lead with his Power Play goal.
Bill Guerin continued to extend the gap with his first Post Season goal during the fourth minute of the third period. Ottawa managed to put one more in during a Power Play, but they just couldn’t make up for the damage that had been caused.
Marc Andre Fleury didn’t receive too many shots in the game, but the 20 that he saved were very influential. Keeping the Senators Shut Out through the first period, he helped his team gain the momentum to go on their scoring frenzy.
Game 4, and the last one before returning to Pittsburgh, will take place this Tuesday, April 20, at 7:00 P.M. ET. If they can pull out a Win, then they’ll have the opportunity to take the series in Game 5.
