The Pittsburgh Penguins put up a tough fight against the Ottawa Senators in Game 1, but just couldn’t pull out the win. This game came down to the wire, with Pittsburgh bringing themselves within a goal during the final minutes of the game; Evgeni Malkin netted two goals and Sidney Crosby grabbed three assists.
Malkin put in the Penguins first Post Season goal during a Power Play in the third minute of the game. Unfortunately, Ottawa answered back a couple of minutes later, followed by another goal in the 14th minute of the period, giving them the lead. A little over a minute into the second period, the Senators took advantage of a Power Play opportunity.
Power Play goals were a big factor in this game. At about the half way point in the game, Malkin sank his second goal in, during another 4v5 situation, but Ottawa widened the gap again with their second Power Play goal of the game. Craig Adams made it 3-4 during the fifth minute of the third period, but the Senators made it 3-5 about four minutes later.
Alex Goligoski looked like he was going to take the first step in the Pens effort to tie the game, with his goal in the 17th minute. Unfortunately, the team just couldn’t put another goal in.
Marc Andre Fleury had a tough time with the Senators, only grabbing 19 saves and giving up five goals. Hopefully, the young goaltender can put this loss behind him and step it up for the rest of the series.
Game 2 between these teams will take place this Friday, April 16, at 7:00 P.M. ET. It will be the last game in Pittsburgh before the two teams travel to Ottawa for two games.
