Sabres Go with Back Up Goalie in Penguins Win

Tuesday night, the Buffalo Sabres decided not to start Silver Medalist, Ryan Miller, who is their number one goalie. Maybe Miller was still tired from doing a spectacular job in the Olympics for the past two weeks, or maybe he felt Miller would be a better opponent for the Washington Capitals tonight…or maybe the Sabres’ coach was worried Sidney Crosby would get in his head, since Crosby was the one who put that final, game winning goal in, past Miller. Whatever the reason, the Pittsburgh Penguins grabbed a victory against Buffalo, maintaining their one point trail behind the New Jersey Devils, in the Atlantic Division.
With about five minutes left in the first period, Sergei Gonchar took advantage of a Penguins Power Play, scoring the opening goal. Three minutes into the second period, Pascal Dupuis made it a two goal lead for Pittsburgh; unfortunately, Buffalo managed to close the gap a little with their goal about three minutes later. 11 minutes into the third period, Ruslan Fedotenko put in his ninth goal of the season, bringing the score to 3-1. With under six minutes remaining in the game, Buffalo made it a close game, but just couldn’t put another goal in.
Marc Andre Fleury was also absent in this game, making it over two weeks since he’s played; despite being named to the Canadian roster, his assistance was never needed. Brent Johnson went between the pipes, making 26 saves and grabbing his eighth win of the season.
The Penguins will get a night off before taking on the New York Rangers this Thursday, March 4, at 7:00 P.M. ET.
