Thanks to a goal from Jordan Staal in the final minutes of the third period, the Pittsburgh Penguins were able to take the Washington Capitals into Overtime. Despite being able to maintain in Overtime, they could not pull out the Shoot Out win. This season, the Capitals have defeated the Penguins in all three of their match ups; the first in Regulation Time, the second in Overtime, and now this third came in a Shoot Out. In a way, Pittsburgh has improved in each game, so hopefully their final match up of the Regular Season will be a win for the Penguins.
After a scoreless first period, the Capitals put in the opening goal during the first minute of the second period. A little over a minute later, Max Talbot answered back with his second goal of the season. The Penguins took their first lead of the game with a little over five minutes left in the second period, off a Power Play goal from Bill Guerin.
In the fifth minute of the third period, Washington put in a Short Handed goal, followed by a leading goal about two minutes later. With the Penguins determined not to lose this one in Regulation Time, Staal sank a tying goal during the final minutes of the game. Pittsburgh took five shots in Overtime, but just couldn’t put any in. Then, in the Shoot Out, the Pens had a chance to put this one away after three, but a missed shot for Guerin and a goal for Washington sent it into another round where the Capitals grabbed the victory.
Marc Andre Fleury ended up with his sixth Extra Time loss this season, but this managed to help grab a point for the Penguins. That point helped Pittsburgh maintain a lead over New Jersey in the Atlantic Division. Overall, Fleury had 29 saves against the Capitals, along with some in the Shoot Out.
The Penguins can hopefully pull out a win against the Philadelphia Flyers this Saturday, March 27, at 1:00 P.M. ET.
