The Pittsburgh Penguins added a second win following the Olympic break, taking down the New York Rangers in Overtime. The Rangers, who are a Division Rival, currently sit on the lower end of the Atlantic Division. The Penguins have now retaken the position as Division Leader; unfortunately, the New Jersey Devils, who trail by a single point, have played two fewer games.
The Rangers took an early lead in this game, putting a goal in during the opening two minutes. Luckily, Chris Kunitz answered right back about four minutes later with a Power Play goal. Before the half way point of the period, Jordan Staal had an unassisted goal, giving him his 17th of the season and putting Pittsburgh in front. Before the period could come to an end, New York tied it up again with a Power Play goal of their own.
The Rangers dominated the first part of the second period, starting with a goal in the second minute, giving them the lead again. After their third consecutive goal in the 12th minute of the period, Marc Andre Fleury was switched out with Brent Johnson. Less than two minutes after the switch, Michael Rupp made it only a one goal difference between the teams, with the Penguins trailing.
Pittsburgh remained one goal behind until nearly 12 minutes into the final period, when Alex Goligoski scored his seventh goal of the season and tied things up. That goal sent the game into Overtime, where Evgeni Malkin had the game winning goal during a Power Play; the goal was originally credited to Staal, but upon further review, and a confession by Staal, Malkin was named the game winner. The Penguins dominated Overtime with four shots and a goal, compared to the zero shots from the Rangers.
Fleury struggled a bit in this game, only making eight saves and giving up four goals, before being pulled. Johnson did a great job filling in for the second half of the game, despite barely being tested with only four shots. Regardless, the Penguins managed to pull out the win.
The Penguins next game will be against the Dallas Stars this Saturday, March 6, at 1:00 P.M. ET.
