Devils Sweep Penguins in Season Series

The good news is that the Pittsburgh Penguins do not have any more games against the New Jersey Devils in the Regular Season…the bad news is, there is a chance they could meet up in the playoffs. The Penguins got beat by the Devils in all six match ups this season, and all but two of them were by a three or more goal deficit. The loss has tied the Devils and Penguins as leader of the Atlantic Division. With only 12 games left on Pittsburgh’s Regular Season Schedule, they really need to step it up to pull out the first place position over New Jersey.

Only four minutes into the game, Chris Kunitz put in his 11th goal of the season, giving the Penguins an early lead. Unfortunately, the Devils answered back a few minutes later, tying the game, followed by another goal before the first period could come to an end. The real kicker was the Short Handed goal that got by the Penguins during the third minute of the second period. Then, at about the halfway point in the game, New Jersey made it a 4-1 game, prompting the switch of Brent Johnson in the net, and Marc Andre Fleury out.

Five minutes into the third period, Ruslan Fedotenko brought Pittsburgh back to life a little, making it only a two goal deficit. The Penguins fought hard in the third period, taking ten shots, but they just couldn’t put anymore in. The Devils ended the game with a final Empty Net goal.

Fleury had another rough time against the Devils, receiving his fifth season loss against them. He put up a decent first period, making seven saves and letting two by, but before being pulled in the second period, he only had two saves and two allowed goals. Brent Johnson barely got tested during his time in the net, but all five of his saves kept the Penguins in the game until the end.

The Penguins play again, Tonight, March 18, at 7:00 P.M. ET. They will be taking on the Boston Bruins for the final time in the Regular Season. The Penguins record against Boston is 2-1, so hopefully this will be another win.
