Penguins Take the Red Wings in a Shoot Out

It’s the first time the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Detroit Red Wings have gone head to head since last season’s Stanley Cup. After a tied Regular Time and a scoreless Over Time, the game went to a Shoot Out, where the Stanley Cup Champs snagged the victory. Sidney Crosby showed why he is the Captain of this team, putting in the Penguins’ only goal, along with the winning Shoot Out goal.

It’s a surprise that the Penguins only had one goal during the game, because they were the clear winner in the Shooting department; Pittsburgh had 47 shots, compared to the Red Wings 24. With less than four minutes remaining in the second period, Crosby put in a goal off an assist from Alex Goligoski. Unfortunately, with under ten minutes left in the game, Detroit tied the score up, sending things into Over Time. 5 shots were exchanged in the Over Time, but the game would come down to a Shoot Out. This season, the Penguins have only lost one game that went past Regulation Time. Detriot was unable to put their first two shots in, and Crosby and Evgeni Malkin were successful on theirs, giving the Penguins the win.

Marc Andre Fleury did a great job against the Red Wings, much like he did in the Stanley Cup last season. 23 saves, including a save in the Shoot Out, gave the Penguins their 34th win of the season, and his 27th.

The Penguins have six more games before the break for the Winter Olympics. The first of these games will be Tonight, February 1, at 7:00 P.M. ET. They will be taking on the Buffalo Sabres, whom they have a 1-1 record with at the moment.
