Maybe having nearly a week off wasn’t a good thing for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Saturday night, the Penguins played their first game since Monday, taking on the Montreal Canadiens. The two teams went back and forth all game, but in the end, the Canadiens took the win. The Penguins are now only three points behind the New Jersey Devils in the Atlantic Division, nearly matched up on games played.
Less than 30 seconds into the game, Montreal took an early lead. However, nearly 30 seconds later, Pascal Dupuis tied the game up off an assist from Jordan Staal. The score remained tied until the ninth minute of the second period when the Canadiens took the lead again, followed by a third goal less than a minute later, during a Power Play. Almost into the 14th minute of the period, Bill Guerin closed the gap a little, making it a 2-3 game.
It remained a one goal game up until the seventh minute of the third period when Montreal put another goal in. Marc Andre Fleury was traded out with Brent Johnson to try and switch up the chemistry in the game. Unfortunately, about four minutes later, Montreal made it a three goal lead. With under four minutes left in the game, Evgeni Malkin scored his second Short Handed goal of the season. Unfortunately, the Penguins ended the game down by two goals.
Fleury took on 28 shots during his time in the net, but gave up four goals before being pulled. Johnson only saw four shots during his time in the net, but he gave up a single goal himself.
The Penguins play again in less than 24 hours, traveling from Montreal to Washington to take on the Capitals. The game takes place February 7 at Noon, ET.
