The Pittsburgh Penguins took a loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night, but they played a great game, amidst their goal keeping issues. With Marc Andre Fleury sitting out, due to a fractured finger, and Brent Johnson still out with a lower body injury, the Penguins were forced to turn to some lesser known names. John Curry started in goal for Pittsburgh, but after giving up five goals, he was replaced with Alexander Pechurski, who made his NHL debut. The 19 year old wasn’t even able to wear his own pads, due to NHL regulations.

Pittsburgh actually started off the scoring, with a goal from Evgeni Malkin in the seventh minute of the first period. The Penguins held that lead until the 14th minute of the period when Vancouver tied it up. With under two minutes left in the period, the Canucks took the lead with a Short Handed goal.

Curry, who had done a fairly decent job in the first period, gave up three goals during the first four minutes of the second period. Curry was switched out with Pechurski, who ended up doing a spectacular job. Nearly twelve minutes into the second period, Matt Cooke closed the gap a little, making the score 2-5. However, about a minute later, the Canucks got a goal past the young, Pittsburgh goaltender, during a Power Play. The Penguins fought hard, but they just couldn’t recover from the deficit.

Curry had a tough time, only pulling out nine saves during his time in the game. Pechurski, on the other hand, had 12 saves, and only gave up one goal. For a young guy like that being thrust into a situation like this, he played an amazing game.

The Penguin’s next game will be against the New York Islanders. The game will take place this Tuesday, January 19, at 7:30 P.M. ET.
