The Pittsburgh Penguins have added another win to their record after defeating the Atlanta Thrashers on Tuesday night. The Penguins’ rough patch has put them three games behind the New Jersey Devils, but they still remain five games ahead of the New York Rangers.
Both teams came out strong in the first period, exchanging 28 shots between them, but neither team was able to put in any goals. Kris Letang wasted no time in the second period, giving the Penguins their first goal in the opening 39 seconds. Unfortunately, only about two minutes later, Atlanta answered right back with a tying goal. During the eighth minute, Jordan Staal put in his 12th goal of the year off an assist from Tyler Kennedy. During the 14th minute of the period, Ruslan Fedotenko capitalized off a Power Play, giving the Penguins a two goal lead.
Before the second period came to an end, the Thrashers closed the gap a little with their second goal of the game. In the third period, Pittsburgh came out determined to break their losing streak. Eight minutes into the period, Luca Caputi made it a two goal difference, once again. Caputi, who has been playing for Pittsburgh’s minor league team, got this goal in his first NHL game of the season. With less than five minutes left in the game, Staal had his second goal of the game, once again receiving an assist from Kennedy.
Brent Johnson took to the net, giving Marc Andre Fleury a little break. Johnson had 31 saves against the Thrashers, adding another win to his record. He is now 5-3-0.
The Penguin’s next game will be against their Cross-State Rivals, the Philadelphia Flyers. The Flyers are yet to put up a win in 2010, with one of those losses coming from the Winter Classic. The game will take place Thursday, January 7, at 7:30 P.M. ET.
