The Pittsburgh Penguins have taken down the Philadelphia Flyers, for the second consecutive game. The game wasn’t quite the blow out we witnessed in the previous match up, but after a Shoot Out, the Penguins still managed to take the win. Since Philadelphia is a Division Rival, these wins go a long way, and have managed to put the two teams on opposite ends of the division, with Pittsburgh coming out on top.
Only 1:15 into the game, Philadelphia managed to put a goal in, possibly still working off their frustration from the previous loss. However, only about two and a half minutes later, Pittsburgh answered right back off a Power Play goal. Evgeni Malkin took a shot, which got deflected to Chris Kunitz; Kunitz fought for the puck in front of the net, with it eventually sliding to Bill Guerin, who put in the tying goal.
During the first two minutes of the second period, the Flyers used their Power Play to take the lead again. Once again, the Penguins did not allow them to keep the lead for very long, putting in another tying goal during the ninth minute of the period. This Power Play goal was the work of Sidney Crosby, who picked up the kick over from Kunitz. Crosby is now second in the NHL for Goals Scored, and fourth for Overall Points; he is fighting hard to prove he deserves the Art Ross Trophy this year.
19 Shots were exchanged in the third period, but nobody could put anything in. Even during Over Time, neither team was able to get a goal, sending the game into a Shoot Out. It was a short Shootout, with the Flyers missing their first two shots, while Kris Letang and Crosby each made their shots.
Marc Andre Fleury had another good game, only giving up two goals, while saving 31 shots. Fleury has chalked up an 8-1-1 record in his last ten games, earning a 92.2% Save Percentage.
The Penguins’ next opponent will be the Buffalo Sabres, this Saturday, December 19. The puck will drop at 7:00 P.M. ET. Both teams currently lead their division.
