Penguins Get Taken in Ottawa

2

6

The Pittsburgh Penguins currently trail the New Jersey Devils by a point in the Atlantic Division after taking a loss from the Ottawa Senators. It was still anyone's game going into the third period, with the Senators leading by a goal. However, Ottawa really took advantage of some Pittsburgh mistakes and ended up taking a huge lead in the third period.

About a minute into the game, Jordan Staal gave the Penguins an early lead.  The Penguins were looking good for most of the first period, eventually giving up a tying goal to Ottawa in the 12th minute of the period.  The score remained tied until early in the second period when the Senators took the lead off a Power Play goal.  It was only a one goal difference, but that would change drastically in the third period.

1:29 into the third period, Ottawa added another goal to their score.  A few minutes later, the Senators put in two more goals, making the game 5-1.  At this point, Marc Andre Fleury was replaced with Brent Johnson.  Johnson did fairly well until a little error cost them their sixth goal.  Johnson went around the back of the net to stop the puck, controlling it for Sergei Gonchar; however, Gonchar quickly lost it to an Ottawa player, who turned and wrapped it in before Johnson could get back to his post.

With less than three minutes left in the game, Evgeni Malkin managed to add one more to the Penguins score, but it was just too late in the game to get a rally going.

Fleury has been having a rough couple of games, going 3-7 in his last 10 appearances.  He had 19 saves before getting pulled in this game.  Johnson did a little better, making six saves during his short period in the net.  He gave up the one goal, but it was not entirely his fault.

The Penguins will hopefully have a better game against the Atlanta Thrashers this Saturday, November 21.  The game begins at 7:00 P.M. ET.

Penguins Making Their Way Back to the Top

The Pittsburgh Penguins are now tied with the New Jersey Devils for first place in the Atlantic Division, after defeating the Anaheim Ducks. The Penguins, sporting their Blue Alternate Jerseys, limited the Ducks to only 25 shots in the entire game, only two of which converted into goals. Pittsburgh recently had a tough couple of games, but now they seem to be building up their winning streak again.

It only took the Penguins about five minutes to take a two goal lead.  The first came only about a minute and a half into the game when Matt Cooke intercepted a pass right in front of Anaheim's net, backhanding in a goal.  The second one was smashed in by Bill Guerin off a nice easy pass from Sidney Crosby, during a Power Play.  Only a few minutes later, the Ducks managed to put their first goal in.

The only goal in the second period came from Jordan Staal, who took the pass from Deryk Engelland and made the break away for the net.  Early in the third period, Martin Skoula made it a 4-1 game with his long shot from back by the blue line.  In the final minutes of the game, the Ducks managed to get one more in, but still trailing by two goals, they were forced to pull their goalie to take the advantage.  This allowed Matt Cooke to put a final goal into an Empty Net, giving him his second goal of the game.

Marc Andre Fleury was a beast out there, making some great saves.  A few Anaheim breakaways left Fleury one on one, but he still managed to save almost all of those shots.  Fleury made 23 saves throughout the game.

The Penguins have a few days off before taking on the Ottawa Senators on Thursday, November 19, at 7:30 P.M. ET.  The Penguins next three games will be on the road.

Steelers Still Following Last Seasons Record

Steelers- 12                          Bengals- 18

Despite the odds, the Pittsburgh Steelers suffered a disheartening loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. However, they still have the same record as last season, when they went all the way! In the 2008-2009 season, the Steelers were 6-2 going into Week 10, and then lost to the Indiana Colts. Pittsburgh is still 6-3 and only a game behind the Bengals, who currently lead the AFC North.

None of the Steelers 12 points were Touchdowns, giving Jeff Reed a pretty busy day.  On the other side of the board, the Bengals only had one Touchdown, coming from a Kick Return.  A total of eight Field Goals were kicked in this game, falling one Field Goal short of the record in an NFL game.

The Steelers can hopefully get back on their winning streak on Sunday, November 22, when they take on the Kansas City Chiefs.  The Chiefs are only 2-7, so this should be a fairly easy win for the Steelers.

Penguins Win with the Return of Malkin

The Pittsburgh Penguins had an amazing opening to their season, going 11-3 at one point. However, in the last 5 games, they've been 1-4 with their only one of those wins coming on Saturday night against the Boston Bruins. Luckily, Evgeni Malkin returned after his two and a half weeks of being out because of his shoulder injury. He managed to add three assists during his first game back, including the assist that sent the game into Over Time.

This was a very back-and-forth game.  Jay McKee wasted no time, putting a goal in 1:42 into play.  The same team that had been shut out twice in the last four games now had an early lead.  Unfortunately, Boston answered back a few minutes later, tying the score up.  Before the end of the period, Pascal Dupuis got his fourth goal of the season off a rebound from Matt Cooke's wrist shot.

The action continue in the second period, starting off with another tying goal from the Bruins.  About six minutes later, Sidney Crosby had an amazing deflection off of Alex Goligoski's shot, after skating circles around the Bruin's goal.  The Penguins were only able to keep their 3-2 lead for several minutes before Boston put in, yet, another tying goal.

The third period started off with a goal from Mark Eaton off a great pass from Sidney Crosby.  The score has already jumped up to 4-3, but that wasn't the end of it.  With less than six minutes left to play, the Bruins put in the fourth tying goal of the game.  Then, only about three minutes later, the Bruins took the lead for the first time in the game.  It looked like it was all over for the Penguins, who had fought so hard to maintain the lead for the majority of the game...but Pittsburgh wasn't ready to chalk up another loss.

Down by a goal in the final 1:40 of the game, Pittsburgh pulled Brent Johnson from the goal to add an extra forward on the ice.  Now, with only seconds on the board, Evgeni Malkin stripped the puck away from a Bruins player on the Pittsburgh side.  He skated down the ice and sent a pass to Bill Guerin on the opposite side.  Guerin sent a shot whizzing past the Bruin's goalie in the final SECOND of regulation play, sending the game into Over Time.  Only 1:24 into Over Time, Dupuis put in a behind-the-net pass from Jordan Staal, winning the game for the Penguins.

Marc Andre Fleury, who's recently had a couple rough games, took the night off from the net.  In his place was Brent Johnson, who did a great job trying to hold off the Bruins.  Luckily, the Penguins offense stepped up their game and helped match up to the Bruins goals.  Both goalies had a total of 33 shots on them, but Johnson walked away with one more save, making his total shots saved, 28.

The Penguins can hopefully get back on their winning streak this Monday, November 16 when they play the Anaheim Ducks at Home.  The game will begin at 7:30 P.M. ET.

Penguins Fall to the Devils

1

4

The Pittsburgh Penguins loss to the New Jersey Devils put the Devils ahead by two points in the Pacific Division. However, on a lighter note, there is a good chance that Evgeni Malkin will be returning for the Penguins next game on Saturday. Maybe his return will be what Pittsburgh needs to get out of this four game losing streak.

The game started off on a good note with a goal from Roger Fedotenko in the first period, assisted by Sidney Crosby.  The Penguins held this one goal lead for more than a full period, but in the 13th minute of the second period, the Devils tied it up.  About five minutes later, New Jersey took the lead with a Power Play goal stemming from an Interference call on Bill Guerin.

Early in the third period, the Devils made it a 3-1 game.  The Penguins did a good job defending their goal for the remaining time, but they just couldn't put any more goals in.  New Jersey added one more during the final two seconds of play, into an Empty Net.

Marc Andre Fleury, who was one of the top goalies in regards to wins, is now in a five way tie for 4th place.  He had 21 saves in Thursdays game, letting three get past him.  However, all the blame cannot be placed on Fleury for the goals allowed in the past few games.

The Penguins will, hopefully, return with Malkin on Saturday, November 14 when they play the Boston Bruins.  The game will take place at 7:30 P.M. ET.
