Pittsburgh Penguins Give Flyers Their First Loss

Penguins- 5                       Flyers- 4

Coming off of a loss from the Phoenix Coyotes, the Pittsburgh Penguins were ready to put up a win against the Philadelphia Flyers in this Cross-State match up.  Both teams came out tough, going back and forth with scoring until the second period when Pittsburgh took a two point lead.

Evgeni Malkin wasted no time putting a point on the board.  Only 48 seconds after the face-off, the Art Ross recipient made a goal.  About half way through the period, Philadelphia put a point on the board, but the Penguins had a rebuttal.  Less than a minute later, Jordan Staal made it a 2-1 game.

Early in the second period, the Flyers tied it up again.  This time, it took the Penguins about three minutes to take the lead again with a goal from the veteran, Bill Guerin.  A few minutes later, defenseman Alex Goligoski gave the Penguins a two point lead over the Flyers.  In the final minutes of the second period, Philadelphia managed the shorten the gap a little, making the score 4-3.

Both teams came out strong in the third period, both trying to attain that win.  Tyler Kennedy helped ease the tension for Pittsburgh with their fifth goal.  It looked like it was all over when Philadelphia scored again in the final minute of play.  Luckily, Pittsburgh was able to hold the opponents for the remaining time, handing them their first loss of the season.

Marc-Andre Fleury took over the net again making 30 saves.  The Flyers out shot the Penguins, 34 to 25, but the Penguins made more of those shots count.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have a day of rest before taking on the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday, October 10 at 7:00 P.M. ET.
