Pittsburgh Penguins Building Up Another Winning Streak

4

3

Even with the absence of, recently injured Alternate Captain, Evgeni Malkin, the Pittsburgh Penguins managed to pull out a win against the Columbus Blue Jackets, making a last minute comeback. The Blue Jackets, one of the top teams in the Central Division, had the lead for the majority of the game, but lost it in a Shoot Out.

Columbus put the first goal of the game in during the final minutes of the first period, followed by a second goal in the first minutes of the second period.  Chris Kunitz finally put Pittsburgh on the board about half way through the second period.  However, before the end of the period, the Blue Jackets got their third goal of the game.

Trailing by two goals in the third period, the Penguins looked like they were going to take their third loss of the season.  With less than three minutes to play, Ruslan Fedotenko made it a one goal difference.  Only about 40 seconds later, Alex Goligoski tied up the game with his fifth goal of the season, assisted by "Sid the Kid."  After a scoreless Over Time, the game ended up in a Shoot Out where Crosby put it right between the legs of the Columbus goalie, winning the game for Pittsburgh.  This was Crosby's third winning Shoot Out goal this season.

Marc Andre Fleury had the night off while Brent Johnson guarded between the poles.  Johnson has started several times for the Penguins, grabbing his second win of the season with 29 saves.  It's obvious that Johnson isn't quite up to the level that Fleury is, but he is definitely a great back-up goalie for the team.

The Penguins play a Halloween game tonight, at home, against the Minnesota Wild at 7:30 P.M. ET.  This is bad news for the Wild, who are yet to win a game on the road this season, losing eight already.

Crosby Leads Penguins Win with a Hat Trick

6

1

The Pittsburgh Penguins returned from their several days of rest to completely destroy the Montreal Canadiens. The Penguins still lead the Atlantic Division with a 10-2 record. Captain Sidney Crosby, who started the season out kind of slow, had a hat trick against Montreal. Crosby currently leads the teams in goals and is tied with Evgeni Malkin for overall points.

Crosby started off his hat trick only about eight and a half minutes into the game, after Chris Kunitz stole the puck away from a Canadien player.  In the second period, Crosby had his second goal coming off a rebound from Kunitz shot.  About half way through the period, Michael Rupp slipped the puck in off a rebound from Craig Adams long shot.  Only a few minutes later, Crosby finished off his hat trick.  Kunitz gave him a pass right in front of the goal, and a quick move by Crosby gave him an opportunity to make his third for the night.

Early in the third period, the Canadiens finally got one past Marc-Andre Fleury during a 5-3 Power Play; however, it would end up being their only goal for the night.  That didn't stop Pittsburgh from scoring goals, though.  Half way through the final period, defenseman Alex Goligoski made a successful attempt at a long shot, giving the Penguins a four goal lead.  With only a few minutes left of play, Chris Kunitz, who had assisted in two of Crosby's goals, finally got his goal, off a breakaway.

Fleury was absolutely solid in goal.  Saving 23 shots, the only goal that got past him came off a 5-3 Power Play for Montreal.  He currently holds one of the highest Save Percentages in the league with 92.1%, and is second in wins, with nine.

The Penguins will try to get back on another winning streak this Friday, October 30 at 7:00 P.M. ET when they take on the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Penguins vs. New Jersey Devils

1

4

The Pittsburgh Penguins had a good run, but it came to an unfortunate, end on Saturday night when they faced the New Jersey Devils. This loss was only the second for the Penguins this season, and the first for goaltender Marc Andre Fleury. The Penguins record now stands at 9-2, making them the leading team in the Atlantic Division.

The Devils came up with the first goal about half way through the first period.  Towards the end of the second period, they added another, along with a third goal only seconds into the third period.  Alex Goligoski finally put Pittsburgh up on the board about half way through the third period, but it was too late.  New Jersey put one more goal in before the game ended, giving them an impressive win over the Stanley Cup Champs.

Fleury had one of his worst games of the season.  Overall, he made 22 saves, but he managed to let four slip past him.  Hopefully, this was just a bad day for Pittsburgh's star goalie.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have a few days off before they take on the Montreal Canadiens this Wednesday, October 28 at 7:30 P.M.

Penguins Win Shoot Out to Keep the Streak Alive

3

2

The Pittsburgh Penguins refuse to give up their streak so easily. After trailing the Florida Panthers for almost the entire game, the Pens came back to win the game in a Shoot Out. Now on a Seven game winning streak, Pittsburgh takes a nice four point lead in the Atlantic Division.

The first period was dominated by the Florida Panthers.  Their only two goals came towards the middle of the period, but it gave them a two point lead for most of the game.  Both teams had 22 shots by the end of the second period, but the Penguins were unable to put anything in.

The third period is where Sidney Crosby came and put the Penguins back in the game.  Only two minutes into the period, Crosby capitalized off a Power Play, giving the Penguins their first goal.  With only about three minutes left in the game, Crosby tied up the game with a short handed goal off a pass from Evgeni Malkin

The Penguins tried to put the game away in Over Time, taking six shots, but neither team was able to score.  Sid the Kid, already the star of the night, managed to put down the Panthers and keep the streak alive with his Shoot Out goal.  A beautiful maneuver around Florida's goalie and a shot brought Crosby's Shootout record up to 3 for 3.

Marc Andre Fleury was given the night off to rest up for Saturday's big game against division rivals, the New Jersey Devils.  In his place was secondary goalie, Brent Johnson, who started in the Penguins only current, season loss against the Coyotes.  However, Johnson played a great game, saving 27 shots, along with the Shoot Out shots.  Fleury is definitely the Penguin's main man between the poles, but it's nice to see Pittsburgh has a worth secondary goalie.

The Penguins host the New Jersey Devils tonight at 7:30 P.M. ET.  The Devils, trailing the Penguins by eight points in the division, are going to be coming out hard for that win.  However, Pittsburgh has proven they will fight hard to maintain their winning streak.
