Pittsburgh Penguins One Game Away From Sweeping Carolina Hurricanes
After two pretty intense games against the Pittsburgh Penguins, it was expected that the Carolina Hurricanes would break out in full strength back home for Game 3. Luckily, the Penguins captured the win with, what appeared to be, little effort. The Penguins are now one game away from three things:
1) Sweeping the Hurricanes, 4-0
2) Claiming the position of 2009 Eastern Conference Champs
3) Securing a spot in the 2009 Stanley Cup against either the Chicago Blackhawks or Detroit Red Wings
The Hurricanes started off the scoring with an early goal in the first four minutes of play. The Penguins did not let that lead last too long, tying the game with a goal from Alternate Captain Evgeni Malkin only three minutes later. In the final minute of the first period, Captain Sidney Crosby gave the Penguins the lead, which they would hold the rest of the game. Malkin added his second goal of the game in the final 12 seconds of the period.
The second period brought about many good shots for both teams, but no goals were made. In the first two minutes of the third period, the Hurricanes tried the close the gap with a goal, making the score 3-2. However, Ruslan Fedotenko made it a 4-2 game with his goal in the middle of the third period.
In the final two minutes of the game, Carolina was forced to pull their goalie from the net in order to add an extra man to the offense, but this left the net wide open for Craig Adams to add another for Pittsburgh. The Hurricanes added their goalie back in, but Bill Guerin was still able to get a final goal past him, making the final score 6-2.
Who stood strong in the Penguins net for Game 3? None other than the spectacular Marc-Andre Fleury. Fleury made a successful 32 saves in the game, aiding his team in their fourth consecutive win.
The Pittsburgh Penguins will play the Carolina Hurricanes, in what will hopefully be their final game before the Stanley Cup, this Tuesday, May 26 at 7:30 Eastern Time. Game 4 will take place in Carolina, but if the Hurricanes force the series into a Game 5, it will take place back in Pittsburgh.
