Steelers Take the Broncos Down a Peg

Steelers- 28                             Broncos- 10

The Pittsburgh Steelers have now extended their winning streak to five games after giving the Denver Broncos their second loss of the season.  Despite the roaring Denver crowd, Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers delivered a pretty substantial win.  Pittsburgh's record is now 6-2, the same as it was at the end of Last Season's Week 9, and we all remember how last season ended.

The Steelers will face the Cincinnati Bengals at Home this Sunday, November 15 at 1:00 P.M. ET.  The Bengals are currently 6-2, also, but the Steelers have already proven that they have no trouble taking down teams with outstanding records.

Penguins Take Hard Loss to the Sharks

0

5

On Saturday night, the Pittsburgh Penguins sure weren't playing like the Stanley Cup Champs we know them to be; the team suffered a five to nothing shut out by the San Jose Sharks. It is hard to tell whether or not Evgeni Malkin's absence is a big factor in these losses. However, their record before losing Malkin was 10-2, and since it's been 2-3. Luckily, Malkin is skating at practice again and will be joining his team soon.

The Penguins had given up four goals before the game was even half over.  Two goals came in the first period, one off of a Power Play, and two others within the first four minutes of the second period.  The Sharks final goal came in the third period.

The Penguins had issues all around during this game.  The forwards weren't able to put any of their 27 shots in the net.  Obviously, the goalie situation had an impact, with Marc Andre Fleury giving up three goals before being pulled, and Brent Johnson giving up another two.  Between the two goalies, they had 30 saves.  However, you can't blame all of that on the goalies.  Defense was really struggling against the Sharks, getting beat on too many plays.

Hopefully, the Penguins will have a better match against the Boston Bruins this Tuesday, November 10 at 7:00 P.M. ET.  The Bruins should be a slightly easier game for the Penguins.

Penguins Lose First Away Game of the Season

2

5

The Pittsburgh Penguins have amassed an impressive 12-4 record early in the season; oddly enough, all but one of those losses have occurred at home. Thursday night, the Los Angeles Kings gave the Stanley Cup Champs their first road loss of the season. Pittsburgh, still missing their leading assister, Evgeni Malkin, had trouble getting things set up, only taking 23 shots all game.

Los Angeles wasted no time putting a goal in, scoring only 27 seconds into the game.  Less than a minute later, Jordan Staal answered right back for the Penguins with a beautiful long shot.  Two goals in the first minute and half of play!  It looked like this might be a close, high-scoring game.  No more points were scored in the first period, but half way through the second period, Chris Kunitz gave the Penguins the lead with a deflection off of Brooks Orpik's shot.

The third period was where it all went down hill for Pittsburgh.  Early in the period, the Kings tied up game again.  In the twelfth minute of the last period, Los Angeles got two more goals.  In the final minutes of play, the Kings made their fifth goal to win the game with a three goal lead.

It was a tough night for Marc Andre Fleury who hasn't given up five goals in a single game all season.  He had a good first two periods, only giving up one goal from the 20 shots taken on him.  However, in the third period, he only saves 2/3 of his shots, giving up four and saving eight.

The Penguins will face the San Jose Sharks this Saturday at 10:30 P.M. ET.  The Sharks also currently lead their division.

Penguins Now Lead the NHL in Points

4

12-3 is an amazing record! The Pittsburgh Penguins now lead the entire NHL in overall points with 24, and a five point lead in their division. The Penguins have had some close calls this season, already having four Shoot Outs, but winning all of them. Not to mention their several third period comebacks. Despite still missing Evgeni Malkin, the teams leading playmaker, the Penguins still pulled out a 4-3 win over the Anaheim Ducks.

Anaheim put in an early goal to start this game off, but early in the second period, Michael Rupp tied it up.  Half way through the second period, Kris Letang gave Pittsburgh the lead with a wrist shot through a crowd of players.  However, before the period ended, Anaheim tied it again.

Almost eight minutes into the third period, Alex Goligoski made it a 3-2 game with his shot from the point.  Not even 20 seconds later, the Ducks tied it up, once again.  18 shots were taken in the third period, between both teams, but in the end, Pittsburgh took the victory with a goal from Pascal Dupuis in the ninth minute.

Marc Andre Fleury added another win to his record, now tied for first in the NHL in regards to wins attributed to a goalie.  However, his competition, Craig Anderson from the Colorado Avalanche, has played three more games than Fleury, giving him an advantage.  Fleury made 26 saves against the Ducks, giving up one goal each period.

The Penguins go up against another California team, the Los Angeles Kings, this Thursday, November 5, at 10:30 P.M.

Penguins Unable to Defeat the Wild

1

2

In an unexpected occurrence, the Pittsburgh Penguins fell to the Minnesota Wild, giving them their first win on the road. Maybe the Penguins were too tired from their Shoot Out victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets the night before, or maybe the absence of Evgeni Malkin really took a toll on them. Whatever the reason, the Penguins will hopefully step up their game and start playing like they did in previous games.

All the scoring action of this game happened in the first period.  About half way through the period, Minnesota put the first goal in.  A few minutes later, Pascal Dupuis tied up the game for Pittsburgh.  However, in the Final Second of the first period, the Wild took the lead once again.

Pittsburgh came out tough in the second and third period, taking a total of 19 shots, but were unable to put anything else in.  The Penguins fell by a single goal.

Marc Andre Fleury only gave up two goals against the Wild, but it still didn't look good.  The Wild only took a total of 15 shots the whole night.  However, this was only Fleury's second loss of the season.

The Penguins will go up against the Anaheim Ducks this Tuesday, November 3, at 10 P.M. ET.

Pittsburgh Penguins Building Up Another Winning Streak

4

3

Even with the absence of, recently injured Alternate Captain, Evgeni Malkin, the Pittsburgh Penguins managed to pull out a win against the Columbus Blue Jackets, making a last minute comeback. The Blue Jackets, one of the top teams in the Central Division, had the lead for the majority of the game, but lost it in a Shoot Out.

Columbus put the first goal of the game in during the final minutes of the first period, followed by a second goal in the first minutes of the second period.  Chris Kunitz finally put Pittsburgh on the board about half way through the second period.  However, before the end of the period, the Blue Jackets got their third goal of the game.

Trailing by two goals in the third period, the Penguins looked like they were going to take their third loss of the season.  With less than three minutes to play, Ruslan Fedotenko made it a one goal difference.  Only about 40 seconds later, Alex Goligoski tied up the game with his fifth goal of the season, assisted by "Sid the Kid."  After a scoreless Over Time, the game ended up in a Shoot Out where Crosby put it right between the legs of the Columbus goalie, winning the game for Pittsburgh.  This was Crosby's third winning Shoot Out goal this season.

Marc Andre Fleury had the night off while Brent Johnson guarded between the poles.  Johnson has started several times for the Penguins, grabbing his second win of the season with 29 saves.  It's obvious that Johnson isn't quite up to the level that Fleury is, but he is definitely a great back-up goalie for the team.

The Penguins play a Halloween game tonight, at home, against the Minnesota Wild at 7:30 P.M. ET.  This is bad news for the Wild, who are yet to win a game on the road this season, losing eight already.

Crosby Leads Penguins Win with a Hat Trick

6

1

The Pittsburgh Penguins returned from their several days of rest to completely destroy the Montreal Canadiens. The Penguins still lead the Atlantic Division with a 10-2 record. Captain Sidney Crosby, who started the season out kind of slow, had a hat trick against Montreal. Crosby currently leads the teams in goals and is tied with Evgeni Malkin for overall points.

Crosby started off his hat trick only about eight and a half minutes into the game, after Chris Kunitz stole the puck away from a Canadien player.  In the second period, Crosby had his second goal coming off a rebound from Kunitz shot.  About half way through the period, Michael Rupp slipped the puck in off a rebound from Craig Adams long shot.  Only a few minutes later, Crosby finished off his hat trick.  Kunitz gave him a pass right in front of the goal, and a quick move by Crosby gave him an opportunity to make his third for the night.

Early in the third period, the Canadiens finally got one past Marc-Andre Fleury during a 5-3 Power Play; however, it would end up being their only goal for the night.  That didn't stop Pittsburgh from scoring goals, though.  Half way through the final period, defenseman Alex Goligoski made a successful attempt at a long shot, giving the Penguins a four goal lead.  With only a few minutes left of play, Chris Kunitz, who had assisted in two of Crosby's goals, finally got his goal, off a breakaway.

Fleury was absolutely solid in goal.  Saving 23 shots, the only goal that got past him came off a 5-3 Power Play for Montreal.  He currently holds one of the highest Save Percentages in the league with 92.1%, and is second in wins, with nine.

The Penguins will try to get back on another winning streak this Friday, October 30 at 7:00 P.M. ET when they take on the Columbus Blue Jackets.
